An abridged version of a quotation from Tieck’s Romantic artist’s novel “Franz Sternbalds Travels” provides an indicative title for a catalogue containing a representative selection of around 100 master drawings and 30 oil sketches from the first half of the 19th century from the important Kupferstichkabinett (prints and drawings) collection in Kunsthalle Bremen. This includes works by Caspar David Friedrich, Franz Catel, Johann Christoph Erhard as well as many others.
These works enter into a dramatic dialogue with landscape drawings by contemporary German-speaking artists – Bettina Blohm, Bertram Hasenauer, Ulrike Heydenreich, Manfred Holtfrerich, Nanne Meyer, Ugo Rondinone and Malte Spohr.
