Le Sel Noir – Perspectives of Black Contemporary Art presents artworks that explore Black subjectivity, self-empowerment, and the complexities of identity in the field of tension between self-perception and external perception. Inspired by the thinking of Édouard Glissant, the exhibition reflects on mechanisms of power and representation as well as the legacy of colonialism and habitualized paternalism. The focus is not on skin color, but on the struggle for recognition, representation, and equality against the backdrop of ethnicized global relations. This catalog brings together the works featured in the exhibition with accompanying texts that provide contextual insight into the central theoretical perspectives and artistic strategies.
